About

Bob Holmes Fine Artist

I am a London-based artist and Associate of the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers (ARE), working across digital collage, painting and printmaking. My work explores our shifting relationship with the natural world through recurring themes of mythology, memory and the passage of time.

My practice has evolved through the meeting of two seemingly different disciplines. I began as a printmaker and painter, grounded in traditional methods and the material language of making. Years later, an unexpected career in digital design introduced a very different way of thinking about images. For a long time I kept these worlds separate. Bringing them together has become central to my practice. Digital and traditional processes now work alongside one another, allowing images to develop through layering, revision and chance. Fragments gathered from different places, periods and visual traditions gradually accumulate, creating unexpected relationships that often lead the work beyond its original intention.

My work is also very often about the act of looking; my images rarely possess a single, fixed meaning. Each person brings their own memories, experiences and beliefs, creating interpretations that are both personal and valid. I'm interested in the tension between an artist's intention and the viewer's imagination, where meaning remains open without becoming arbitrary. If the work succeeds, it offers a moment of pause: an invitation to look more closely, to embrace ambiguity, and to reflect on our place within a world that is both incredibly beautiful and increasingly, very fragile.
